Sustainable Development Plans Murang’a County Government Must Implement to Re-engineer her Agri-Economic Prosperity.

Hello from Fort Hall. Did you know County 021, formerly Murang’a Municipality, was so rich she could lend the National Treasury millions of money? That was just 3 decades ago.

But alas! The marriage between Murang’a and wealth has been very unstable in the recent decades. However, were the leadership of governor Dr. Irungu Kang’ata and his heirs keep on the rejuvenation traction, all will be happy a Metumi residents.
Sure enough, good education as a philosopher once pointed, is a solid foundation upon which a civilised, fortified society stands.

Dr. Kang’ata’s government has been implementing the genius policies and incentives promoting the agriculture sector in the county. These include Murang’a Youth for Coffee program, incentives to mango and milk farmers, introduction of sorghum into the ASAL regions and setting up of industries to process bananas amongst other developments. The county 021 assembly also passed the Murang’a County Agroecology Development Bill, 2022.

The bill led to the launchi Murang’a County Agro-ecology Development Policy: 2022-2032 Nevertheless, the county government alone cannot achieve the manifesto. Other stakeholders need to support the county government in delivering the manifesto. Such stakeholders include Community Based Organisations, centres of learning and training and the generous hardwork of the farmers and the business community.

“Over the 8 Years of implementing this Agro-ecology Policy, the County will work towards becoming the leading county in sustainable agricultural production, food security, food safety, green products trade and marketing.”

An upcoming youth-led CBO Honia Afrika Initiative (HAI) is one CBO hoping to walk the talk of making Murang’a great in tow with the County 021 government. HAI is envisioned to partake in birthing of a new Pan African civilisation redeemed from post-colonial corruption of culture, governance, philosophy and socioeconomic dispensation.

Therefore, HAI has been engaged in an ongoing independent research aimed at supporting the agriculture manifesto. The ongoing research, seeks to complement Dr. Kang’atas manifesto in establishing Murang’a as a food secure, healthy county recommends and proposes policies and strategic action development plans.
In support to the Murang’a County Agroecology Development Act, 2022, HAI has come up with a draft development policy encapsulating a sustainable strategic action plan development on a mass County Chemical -Organic Farming Migration.

The draft policy is inspired by the Paris Agreement, UNDP, AUDA, NEMA Sustainable Development Goals guidelines.

HAI has also proposed other policies envisioned to collaborate with the Murang’a County government departments. Inclusive are: introduction of new locally produced product into the local and Kenyan-international market; Reforms in the education sector; New land use and planning management policy proposals and; new efficient land reclamation and rehabilitation methods.

The CBO hopes for Dr. Kang’ata’s government support in the implementation of such policies and projects in the prospective of healing Africa from the home county.
