Many institutions of learning were affected by the April -early May adverse weather and floods. This caused the Ministry of Educational CS Machogu to make critical change in the academic calendar by postponing the school resumption date from 30th April to 13th May.

This has in turn contributed to the school calender being constricted such that the teachers are under pressure to complete syllabus on time, and the students under pressure to consume book loads of knowledge.
So far, According to the Saturday Nation publication of 18th May, more than 2,000 pupils and students have not reported to schools in Mai Mahiu. Many more pupils and students elsewhere in the country are yet to go back to schools with classrooms and washrooms destroyed by the floods. Many pupils and students lost their lives too.
This makes it a matter that calls for the Ministry of Education to liaise with the Ministry of Environment and the county governments Climate Action committees to work hand in hand in climate change mitigation. This includes projects like holding a national Kenyan Schools Tree Planting Day in the near future.

Still, a Environment and Climate Change Action Studies syllabus needs to be incorporated in the school curriculum. This will help in producing environmental conservation conscious patriots.
Still, the ministry of education and county governments should organise yearly Essay Competitions with major theme being environmental conservation and Climate Action.
On Friday, 17th May 2024, Ndugamano Sec School community in Kínyona Ward, Kigumo Sub County in Murang’a participated in tree planting. Almost 450 students and teachers planted a tree each in the school’s compound.

A tree trunk had fallen on the roof of one classroom before resumption but the school administration had seen to the repair before the opening day. Some of the boys toilets sunk their floors. Hopefully, Kigumo CDF office will respond to chip in funds to help in the repair.
